Local Area Information

Beaches

The local beach Monte Clerigo is a really great beach and has a couple of nice simple restaurants & bars. If you want to take the children for a swim in the sea then try Amoreira which has a river running down to the sea which is great for swimming. Head back down into Aljezur past the Intermache and take the first left sign posted Amoreira. Follow the road along to the end to get to the beach and restaurant the river is of the far left hand side of the beach. Alternatively you can park on the left of the road about 1 mile from the beach and walk to the river which is tidal and has sandy shores.

Restaurants (Most of these can be found in Trip adviser)

Restaurante Ze

This is a great local restaurant located at our local beach Monte Clerigo. (3 miles from the villa) Try the fresh fish or Peri Peri Frango, Swordfish is also good. Kids can get a drink or an ice cream. Go for a meal at one of the restaurants back up at the VDT roundabout and then down to the beach for Coffee and cake.

Drive past the VDT general store and take the right fork past the tennis courts on your left. At the roundabout take the first right and follow the road down to the beach. Ze can be found in front of you. Just before the beach there is a dirt road turning on the left which is a really good place to watch the sun go down with a glass of something cold.

O' Sargo

A new restaurant at Monte Clerigo overlooking the wonderful sandy beach. The restaurant has a young vibe to it and serves fresh fish, great steaks and wraps. An informal atmosphere and occasionally has live music.

Gulli Bistro

Our favorite restaurant. Excellent seafood, wild boar, pasta & Pizzas. Eat outside in the garden. You may need to book a table. Down the hill and turn right onto the N120 heading south to Largos Restaurant is 3 miles down on the right. (You passed it on your way to the villa when coming from the airport)

ShaBouco

We really like this place a little further out of town but worth the 15 minutes in the car. Fresh fish, steaks & burgers with children portions. Drive back past Gulli and take the Sagres road turning right off the N120. The sign post for the restaurant can be about 3 miles down on the right hand side.

Restaurante Taberna do Gabriel

Drive down to Monte Clerigo beach and up the other side of the hill as you go around the bend there is a turning to the left. Follow the new road along to the

restaurant. It has stunning views over Amoreira beach you don’t have to eat we often enjoy a drink looking at the views. That said his local cured ham is excellent.

Restaurante III Geracao

Really recommend this restaurant. It is in Aljezur on the left hand side just before the bridge. Sunday night is special with many Portuguese families eating out. The Tapas is really good they have a children’s menu, however we would recommend the Monkfish & Prawn stew (takes 40 minutes to cook) Meal for two serves four.

There are four restaurants at the VDT roundabout and all represent good value for money. We like the new Tapas bar.

Pizzeria

Sign posted at the VDT roundabout you can eat in or take out.

Finally don’t forget to visit Arrifana which is the famous surf town and beach close to VDT. Sign posted form the VDT roundabout. Apart from a nice selection of bars and restaurants you can park up on the cliffs and check out the surfers below.

Aljezur - history

Welcome to Aljezur Uncovered! Your guide to holidays in Aljezur, in western Algarve, Portugal. For tourist information about Aljezur, its beaches, accommodation, restaurants, shops, things to do and in fact, all things Aljezur Uncovered!

Aljezur is about 30km north of Lagos on the N120 and is situated in a lush, green, fertile valley, an area well known for it's sweet potato crops. It is built on either side of the river that runs through the valley...the old town being on one side and the new town on the other. The remains of a Moorish 10th century castle can be seen high on the hill over the old town and the views from there are fantastic!

To drive to the castle (rather easier than walking!), follow the sign to the 'historic centre' which takes the road to the left of the bridge, through a rather narrow street and then up the hill, again quite narrow and cobbled and very steep..just keep going until you reach the top.

Cross the river to the 'new' town and the first thing you see is the 18th century church, Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Alva, at the top of the main street. Next to the church is the town square with shops and cafes around it and space to relax and enjoy the peacefulness of the town, broken only by the bells marking the hours as they pass!

Aljezur is only 10km from the nearest beach, Praia de Monte Clérigo, a short drive through wonderful countryside and with spectacular views of the Western Atlantic coast as you approach the beach. In springtime the roadsides and the clifftops are covered in flowers of all colours and with all the foliage and grass fresh and green it really is quite a sight to see.

Aljezur and the villages and countryside in this corner of the Algarve are quite different from the more hectic south coast - there is no hustle and bustle. You can see farmers ploughing their land with an oxen and a hand plough as they have done for centuries, take a walk along the cliffs or a stroll on one of the beaches and you might not see anyone unless it's a wet-suited surfer or someone fishing from the rocks.
